WHERE DOES TIME GO?
I mean reely. Time was there all evening. I culd feel it passing slowly as I watched the card players and listened to the talk about candy. And now time was gone. Time had run out. I was late. Is there a hole time falls into? Does time play hide and seek? Where does it go?
I headed for our camp siteâwherever that was. I didnt know. I was afraid it wuld take a long time but I found the paved road rite away and followed it around to our camp. The moon was up so I culd see OK. And there were camp fires. People near by played music and sang about somebody coming round the mountain when she came.
Our 2 tents were side by side. I walked past Grampas tent and crawled into the other and rite off there was a problemâsomebody was in my sleeping bag.
Was it the wrong tent? No because there was Spencer. I culd see his face. His glasses were off but it was him all rite. So who was in my sleeping bag? I checkedâit wasnt any body. It was my clothes. Somebody had stuffed them in the bag.
Weerd.
I bundled the clothes to make a pillow and found my tooth brush and used itâsort of. I slid off my shorts and got into my bag. Then I remembered Grampa telling me to make sure to say good nite.
I sat up and cleared my throat.
âNite Grampa,â I said into the dark. Well the pretty dark. His tent was close enuff for him to hear me if he was awake.
Nothing.
So I said it louder.
âNite Grampa.â
Spencer must of herd me. He mumbled something. Was he awake?
âNite Spencer,â I said.
He turned over. He was breathing deep. He was asleep the hole time.
âWeve already done this Bernard,â said Grampa from his tent. His voice sounded clear as a bell. A grumpy bell.
âWe have?â I said.
âEvery body has said good nite to every body else. Now go to sleep.â
So I did. I lay down with my clothes for a pillow and dreamed about riding. In my dream I wore a cowboy hat and carried an ax and galloped across the desert on Gale the horse. She looked over her sholder and said, Hey.
Thats what you eat, I said. She laffed. Then she asked how come I was so smart. I patted her. Your feet are lovely, I said in my dream.
And then somebody shook me and woke me up. The tent was still dark. I culdnt see who it was. Spencer? A hand went over my mouth. Oh yah. I remembered now. This was Tyler. It was almost dawn. He and Beth and I were on our way to get Spencers phone back. This was her plan.
I thot about waking Spencer and decided no. Hed be so impressed when I gave him his phone. Here you go, Id say and hed say, Wow.
I nodded my head and Tyler took his hand off my mouth. I got into my shorts and followed him out the tent door.
